Best AC in India 2019 – Buying Guide

What is the difference among a computer and an air conditioner? A computer requires ‘Windows’ to be open for effective functioning while the AC needs the windows to be close. Having started on a lighter be aware, we shall dig deep and study the different elements that you must understand at the same time as investing in air conditioners in your houses and offices.

With the increase the demand for AC units, you’ve got more brands of air conditioners inside the marketplace. The awareness levels amongst people have increased as well. But, still, you must be aware of different functions before investing in the right AC on your houses. This buying guide goals to make things smooth for you.

Working of the air conditioner

There are two explanations for the running (working) of the air conditioner. One is the scientific method while the other one is a simple one that might be understood by all. We shall start with the simple one.

Heat and cold are synonymous with each different. The absence of heat is a cold and vice versa. The AC works on a similar principle. It removes the heat from within the rooms. Thus, you experience the rooms getting cooler.

Does this not bust one among the largest myths that air conditioners generate cooling? No, they do not longer do that. They eliminate the heat for cooling the rooms.

Now, we are going to discuss the scientific method of how Ac units work. Basically, the air conditioner works at the 3 principles of evaporation, condensation, and compression. We will look into these processes in brief to get a fair idea.

1. Every AC unit has a refrigerant gasoline (we shall communicate about this gasoline later within the article). The first step within the operating of the AC is the compression of this refrigerant gas. When you compress a gasoline, it turns into an excessive-pressure hot liquid.

2. This hot liquid then flows through the condenser coils wherein the heat escapes while cooling the liquid. But the liquid continues to be under high pressure.

3. The expansion valve comes into play via converting the high-stress liquid into a low-strain one.

4. These low-pressure liquid flows via the evaporator coils of the AC. It doing so, it absorbs the heat from the room. This heat converts the liquid into gas yet again. As the system of absorption of heat goes on, you enjoy cooling of the room. Now, you have to ensure that you do not increase the heat inside the room. This explains why you have to close the home windows.

5. Now, we are once more back to square one. The refrigerant gasoline comes again into its original form. The technique keeps on repeating continuously.

You have different forms of AC units. In a single-unit window AC, the compressor, condenser, and the evaporator all are located in a single unit. In case of a split AC unit, you have got the compressor and the condenser located within the outside unit whereas the indoor unit accommodates of the evaporator coils.

Size of the AC – Select the proper Tonnage

Various factors move into the selection of the proper size of the AC. Let us take a look at all of them in brief.

1. City in which you stay: The weather of the city where you stay is important due to the fact you need air conditioners of better capacities when the outdoors temperature increases. For example, the summers in Delhi can see temperatures touching 45 degrees Centigrade whereas it would be across the 38 to 40-degree mark in a city like Chennai at the equal time.

2. The area and the volume of the room in which you put in the AC are very important.

3. The location of the room is important because the fact lots depend the rooms can get hotter if the ceiling gets direct sunlight from the top at some point of the day. The same applies to the aspect walls as well.

4. The daily usage of the AC unit is vital and so is also the usage in months for the duration of the year.

What is the tonnage of the AC?

As you check the AC units in the market, you find the air conditioners of various tonnage such as 1-ton, 1.5-ton, 2-ton, and so on.

What does this suggest?

The tonnage is the quantity of heat, the air conditioner removes from the room in one hour. The mathematical unit of tonnage is BTU (British Thermal Units). 1 ton equals to 12000 BTU. Higher the BTU, the more is the cooling impact.

We have just seen that the scale/tonnage of the AC depends on different factors. You also can add more than one other relative factors which include some of occupants inside the room, the amount of furniture/appliances in the room, and so on.

Electricity consumption of the AC units:

How much power does an air conditioning unit consume? This is a common question on the minds of all AC shoppers. It again depends upon on different factors like the tonnage, star score, and usage of the AC and so on. Let us look at some of the principal aspects in short.

Modes of operation of the AC devices:

There are different modes wherein you can use the AC. The consumption of power depends upon at the mode of operation of the AC.

Cool Mode

This is generally the default mode in any AC. It depends upon at the temperature and the fan velocity setting. Generally, you should hold the temperature set at 25 degrees Centigrade. This is the maximum secure temperature to ensure best performance.

Fan Mode

In this mode, the compressor stays off. You save electricity with this technique but it does no longer bring about the cooling of the room. A ceiling fan can do a better activity.

Dry Mode

This is the proper mode to apply in a humid climatic condition like where you live in locations near the sea. The purpose of using this mode is that it removes the humidity from the air, then by cooling the room mechanically. The fan runs at slow speeds and the compressor for shorter length in large cycles. The most important goal is to eliminate the humidity and cool the room as such.

Energy Power saver Mode

In this mode, the compressor shuts down when the temperature of the air reaches the level set within the thermostat. The fan keeps running to maintain the chilliness. When the temperature exceeds a certain level, the compressor starts their functioning once more. The compressor is the most important consumer of power. As it oscillates between the on and the off position, it consumes less power.

Quick Cool Mode

Strictly speaking, this isn’t a power saving choice. But you have this feature in lots of Ac units in which the AC starts performing at a hard and fast temperature of 16 or 18 levels Centigrade as against the 25 ranges within the ordinary mode.

Sleep Mode

This is a special mode by which the AC increases the temperature of the thermostat by using 1 degree each hour till it will increase the temperature by means of 2 degrees. At night, the outside is already cooler. Hence, this facility ensures that your AC consumes much less electricity.

6th sense cooling

This mode is available only inside the Whirlpool AC units wherein the technology adjusts the fan speed depending on the temperature in the room. This mode is better than the cool mode.

You have just seen the different working modes of an Air Conditioners. Choosing the right mode for your AC can go a long time in decreasing your electricity consumption.

Now, we will also look at some other aspects that affect electricity consumption.

  • Size of Room

The main job of the AC is to remove the heat from the room and making it cool. Hence, more depends on the size of the room. Understand that the power consumption of an AC unit depends on the amount of heat present in the room.

1.5-ton AC in a room measuring 125 sq feet will work differently as compared to the same AC in a room measuring 150 sq feet. This is because of the more volume of hot air.

  • Location

Some places in India like Delhi or Nagpur are very hot in the summer months. However, the climate remains dry. On the other hand, places like Mumbai and Chennai contains a great deal of humidity. It could not be hot but the humidity can be a draining experience. Your Air Conditioners will work differently under both circumstances.

In the first case requires the Air Conditioner to cool down the room whereas the main job of the AC in the latter example is to remove the humidity. Thus, an Air Conditioner with a larger size and tonnage is perfect for the hot places whereas a smaller AC unit would suffice to remove the humidity.

  • Color

This is a surprising factor, but colors do affect the performance of the AC. Darker colors absorb more heat. Hence, they take a longer time to cool. Hence, it is always better to have lighter colored walls and curtains.

  • Number of people:

The more the number of people in the room, the more is the emission of heat from the bodies. Hence, you experience that you need AC units of higher tonnage to cool rooms having a greater number of people. A 155 sq feet room in your house can work with a 1.5-ton AC whereas the room of the same size will need two 2-ton ACs in case you are running a coaching class/school with say 20 to 25 kids in the room.

  • Electrical Appliances:

Just as people emit heat, similarly electrical and electronic appliances emit heat. The simple appliance like bulb also emit heat. Hence, it is advisable to have LED lights in your room. They not only save your electricity but also emit less heat.

Having more furniture in the room can also increase the power consumption of the AC. It is better to keep your cupboards and shelves shut off (closed) in an AC room. The walls of the room also absorb heat as well. Hence, insulating the walls can also help in reducing power consumption.

Inverter AC – Concept, Working, and Benefits

The most common thing doing the arounds today is ‘Inverter AC’. What is an inverter Air Conditioner? If you think that this is an Air Conditioner unit that can work on the home inverter, I am afraid, you are badly mistaken. The home inverter has nothing to do with inverter AC. These AC units work on the Inverter Technology where they save a lot of power.

In a regular AC, the compressors work at full capacity when it is on. On reaching the optimum temperature, the compressors switch off and the fan continues to operate. Once, the temperatures rise above the threshold limit, the compressors start again and work at full capacity. This shows that the compressor works at only two speeds, full and Zero.

This is not the matter with inverter ACs. These compressors work at different speeds. In this technology, the compressors never switch off, It is always on. But it runs at different speeds thereby use less power.

Inverter AC vs Non-Inverter AC

Now, we will see the difference between the efficiency of an inverter AC and the non-inverter AC.

The basic difference between the inverter AC and the non-inverter AC is that the inverter AC is capable of running at variable speed and variable tonnage. The non-inverter AC units is run at a constant speed and tonnage.

Inverter AC units are capable of adjusting their speed and tonnage according to the heat in the room. The non-inverter AC units do not have this type of capacity.

Efficiency wise, inverter AC units are 7.5% more efficient than their counterparts in the same star rating category.

Copper Coil vs Aluminium Coil

Air Condition units work on the basis of compression, condensation, and evaporation. This includes moving of the refrigerant gas inside coils in gaseous as well as liquid forms. Now the question arises, which of the coils is better, copper or aluminium.

In the past times, the coils were primarily made of copper. Subsequently, General Electronics made the revolutionary change in 1970-71 when they substituted copper coils with aluminium coils. From that day in 1970-71, the debate between alunimiun and copper coils continues.

We will discuss on the various aspects of choosing the right kind of coils for your AC.

Heat transfer

Copper has a more heat transfer coefficient than aluminium. Hence, it shows that copper is a better heat exchanger than aluminium

Cost Factor

Aluminium is the cheaper than copper. So, AC units with aluminium coils are cheaper.

Malleability

Aluminium is the more malleable than copper. So, it is easy to mould aluminium into any desired shape more easily than copper. Thus, aluminium is the better choice for making AC coils.

Strength

Now, we can say copper is stronger than aluminium. Coper coils are the well known of lasting much longer than aluminium coils. They require fewer repairs cost as well.

Maintenance

You know that the condenser coils are always placed in the external units. Hence, they are subject to the instance of weather. Copper coils are easier to maintain while you require to keep the aluminium coils in heavy-duty cabinets and so, making them difficult to maintain.

Corrosion

The AC works in a moist environment at all times. Hence, there is always a risk of corrosion. This corrosion results in the formation of a layer over the coils and affecting its conductivity. People living in humid areas near the sea must be extremely cautious about this.

 Blue fin condenser Technology

On the subject of corrosion, one should add that there are technologies available today that works towards reducing corrosion. One such technology is the Blue Fin Condenser. In this technology, they paint these coils with anti-corrosive materials for increasing the life of the AC units.

Microchannel condenser coils

In fact, you will find the microchannel condenser coils to be aluminium coils. These are flat aluminium tubes having small holes in them through which the refrigerant flows. Since the whole set up is of a single metal, aluminium, there is no chance of galvanic corrosion. Hence, these coils are a better option for ACs working in coastal regions. Samsung uses that technology in its AC and call them the MultiJet technology.

Reciprocating Vs Rotary Compressors

You have seen the difference between aluminium coils and copper coils. Now we will discuss towards compressors. Let us now see at the difference between the reciprocating compressors and rotary compressors.

Everyone knows that the compressor is the most important component of any AC unit. You should know that it is the heart of the unit. Hence, one should have knowledge of how compressor works. Let us look the role of the compressor in an AC.

The main job of the compressor is to compress the refrigerant gas to a high pressure and then converting it into a high-pressure liquid at high temperature. This liquid passes through the condenser coils which take out the heat from the liquid and release it to its surroundings.

However, the pressure will remain high. After that, The expansion valve reduces the pressure and converts the liquid into gas which subsequently passes through the evaporator coils. The evaporator coils absorb the heat from the room for cooling the rooms.

There are main two types of compressors in use in the AC units.

Reciprocating compressor – This is a like (similar) to the engine of the automobile which works on the concept of the cylinder and piston. The piston works in a back and forth motion which resulting in compression and release of the gas.

Rotary compressor – This arrangement includes a number of rotors having very little clearance between them. These rotors rotate in opposite directions where the air passing through them, emerges at a higher pressure.

*Let us see the advantages and disadvantages of the reciprocating and rotary compressors to understand which of the technologies is better.

Advantages of Reciprocating Compressors

  • Easy to maintain
  • Capable of working at higher pressures

Disadvantages of Reciprocating Compressors

  •  Produces a lot of noise
  •  The air comes out at high temperature

Advantages of Rotary Compressors

  • Good for large offices and industries
  • Less noise
  • The Air comes out at lower temperature

Disadvantages of Rotary Compressors

  • Expensive as compared to reciprocating compressors
  • Higher usage is required for optimum working

One can conclude from the above advantages and disadvantages that the reciprocating compressors are perfect for homes and small offices. The rotary compressors are perfect for heavy-duty uses such as in offices and industries.

Air conditioning Refrigerants

Normally, when you see that the AC does not give enough cooling, the mechanic suggests that you should replace the coolant. What exactly is that coolant or the gas as they say it in many parts of the world?

Refrigerant Global Warming Poetential Ozone Depletion Potential
R 22 1810 Medium
R 410A 2088 Nil
R 32 675 Nil
R 134A 1430 Nil
R 290 3 Nil
R 600A 3 Nil

Coolant is also known as refrigerator and plays an important roll in air conditioning and refrigeration devices. The main function of the air conditioning refrigerants is to absorb the heat from the rooms and deliver it outside. Once you remove heat from the room, the air in the room automatically be cold.

The coolant is in the form of a gas. The compressor compresses that gas at high pressure and converts it into  liquid. At such high pressures, the liquid has a very high temperature. That liquid passes through the condenser coils where the temperature of the liquid comes down but the pressure remains high. On releasing the high-pressure cold liquid from an expansion valve, the Air Condition units reduce the pressure.

Then, this liquid travels through the evaporator tubes (coils). That cold liquid absorbs the heat from the room and eliminates it, that is making the air in the room cold. The fans in the AC units help in maintaining the temperature.

In the process absorption of the heat, the liquid evaporates and converts into gas once again. This same process is repeated continuously. That is how an AC units work. Thus, you have seen that the refrigerant is the main component of any AC units.

Different types of refrigerants have been used over the years. They are as follows.

Chlorofluorocarbon CFC

These were the first coolants used in AC units all around the world. These were also known as R12 refrigerants. These were effective, but these played a great role in the depletion of the ozone layer in the atmosphere. This led to the decrease the manufacture of this R12 refrigerant. Now, no one AC units use this coolant anywhere in the world.

Hydrochlorofluorocarbon HCFC

Environmental problems led to the replacement of the CFCs by the HCFCs. That refrigerant, famously, known as R22 and it is the most common coolant used in AC units in India today. However, that coolant is also not environmentally friendly. Hence, it is probably that these coolants will be phased out over the next 4 to 5 years.

That is why you should be careful while you are choosing your AC. If the manual shows that the use of R22 as the coolant, it is advisable you should not to buy that AC because it is an outdated one. In spite of that fact, the majority of AC units use this coolant in India.

Hydrofluorocarbon HFC

In Comparing with the R22 coolant, the HFCs do not deplete the ozone layer. Hence, these are comparatively environmentally friendly. There are three types of HFCs in use today (R410A, R32, and R134). The world is moved ahead and switched over to a more environmentally friendly refrigerant. India is also near on the heels of that developing nations and has a plan to phase out that hydrofluorocarbons in the coming years.

Hydrocarbon HC

You should have awareness about these small factors while you are deciding to purchase AC units for your house. It is a duty of every person in the world, towards maintaining the sanctity of the environment. You must leave a better world for your children to live in. Small factors such as choosing the right coolant for your AC and refrigerator can play a main roll in this endeavour.

Star Ratings, EER, CoP, ISEER

Now, Let us  see the factors affecting the efficiency of the AC units and the the concept of star rating..

Energy Efficiency Ratio: (EER)

The EER is an important ratio that differentiates between Air Condition units. Scientifically,

EER   =   Amount of heat removed (eliminate) per hour divided by the amount of power consumed.

Thus, EER = BTU/hour/Watt

The higher EER, the better is the performance because the air conditioners remove more heat per hour per unit of power consumed. Thus, you can conclude that an AC with a higher EER is more efficient.

Co-efficient of Performance: (CoP)

You have to do some simple mathematical calculations to calculate the CoP. If you want to understand the concept of CoP, you should know the relation between BTU and KW hour.

1 KW hour = 3412 BTU. Alternatively, you can also say that 1 KW = 3412 BTU/hour.

Therefore, 1 W = 3.412 BTU/hour

Now, CoP is the amount of heat removed by AC in Watts, divided by the power consumption in Watts. Hence, you should know that CoP does not have any units. Higher the CoP, the higher the efficiency of the AC unit. Now, Let us see the relation between EER and CoP.

EER = 3.412 X CoP

Star Ratings

Whenever you want to buy an AC, the first thing you should look out for the star ratings. What exactly are the star rating? The Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Department of Energy, Government of India prescribes these star ratings for different electronic products. A lot of factors affect in the formulation process.

These star ratings are fixed for specific periods. We show you below the star ratings for window and Split Air Conditioner units for the period 01.12.2016 to 31.12.2017.

That table shows that you should look at the star ratings along with the EER. It is necessary in the part of AC manufacturers to include the EER on the star rating sticker. You should understand that the 5-star AC is always more expensive than the 4-star AC. However, you will save a lot of energy consumption over a long period.

There are other different aspects to look into while we are discussing on the topic of energy savings. It includes the SEER, ISEER, and other terms concerned with the performance of the AC such as CSTL and CSEC. We will see all these terms in brief for better understanding of the subject.

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER)

There are various factors that affect the performance of the AC is the external and internal temperature. If the temperature outside the house is more, then the AC unit consumes more electricity to cool the interiors.

The temperature in the rainy season and winter are much less than what you feel in the summer season. Therefore, the EER of the AC units depending on the season in which you will use the appliance. That is the concept of SEER.

Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (ISEER)

The concepts of SEER and ISEER are the same. However, you should look into two additional factors as below.

Cooling Seasonal Energy Consumption (CSEC): Total energy consumed by the Air Condition when it is in active mode

Cooling Seasonal Total Load (CSTL): Total heal removed by the Air Condition in active mode.

Now, we will come to the concept of ISEER.

ISEER   =   CSTL/CSEC (Total amount of heat removed to the total amount of energy consumed)

The BEE makes it necessary for an Indian AC manufacturer to declare the ISEER on the star rating label. Here is the defined range of ISEER for Inverter ACs.

While on the subject of star rating, you should have knowledge of certain terms and concepts regarding your AC units. You come across these terms frequently. It is better to be aware of the same and ask questions to the dealer before deciding the type of Air Conditioner, you wish to buy for your home.

Rated Cooling Capacity: The rated cooling capacity of an Air Condition is ‘a ton’. That is equal to 12000 BTU per hour.
